Self-care is never a selfish act. It is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer others.

                                 Parker Palmer

Think self-care is only for the self-serving or self-absorbed?  Think again.

Whereas some self-care strategies emphasize time alone to recharge, others focus on connection and engagement with the world around us.

And whereas some self-care strategies promote relaxation and rest, other promote activity, advocacy, and activism.

In addition, self-care:

  • reduces everyday stress and related illness
  • helps protect against– and manage– anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues
  • improves patience, focus, and mindfulness
  • benefits both you AND those you care for
  • needn’t involve bubble baths or other “spa stuff” (unless of course you want it to!)
  • can be practiced one strategy at a time… Or in a SPREE!

THE SELF-CARE SPREE

SELF-CARE
noun \’self -ˈke(ə)r\
: the practice of activities that are necessary to sustain life and health, initiated and carried out by the individual for him- or herself

SPREE
noun \ˈsprē\
: an unrestrained indulgence in or outburst of an activity

NOTE: The following ideas are organized into general categories, in no particular order. Pick and choose as you like, and see what suits you best!

THE BASICS: a good place to start

  • Make sure you’re someplace safe.
  • Eat something. Drink a glass of water.
  • How’s the temperature?  Warm up or cool off as needed.
  • Get some rest.
  • Pray or meditate.
  • Call a help hotline.
  • Find a therapist and schedule a free consultation.
  • Cross 1 thing off your To Do list.
  • Set a timer for 15 minutes.  Blast some music and tidy an area of your house.
  • Take inventory of your kitchen.  Make a list of essentials, then plan a grocery run.
  • Evaluate (or create) your monthly budget.  Make adjustments as needed.
